The people's forest

The People's Forest Concept

The People's Forest is a concept created by Dr Daniel Collins as a form of forest reserve that incorporates both conservation and sustainable harvesting of natural resources and plant and animal resources.

The People's Forest is a social enterprise aimed at saving and increasing the area of forests and bushlands, by involving people and allowing access to all groups regardless of race or backgrounds. Recreational fishing, birdwatching, some hunting, camping and cabin stays are open to all peoples for a small fee. Additionally, forest products are harvested on a sustainable yield basis, including everything from timber to native fruits and vegetables, wild fibres and canes, to edible wildlife and honey. Proceeds go back into the preservation and restoration of more forest, purchase of more land for forest, and the management of the forest areas for rangers, scientific monitoring and maintenance of visitor facilities. These reserves are non-smoking, drug and alcohol free zones...

Coraculture is currently working with groups in New Brittain in Papua New Guinea to set up large forest reserves under the People's Forest concept. There are also parcels of land on Cape York in North Queensland that could be reverted to the People's Forest approach. There are even some indigenous reserves in the Amazon considering joining the People's Forest movement.
